RCA released their latest Elvis album "(I'm 10,000 Years Old) Elvis Country" (LSP-4460). The album as it's title suggested, was made with a country feel to it and included the two tracks that made up his latest single. The material was from the recording sessions in Nashville in June and September. The front cover used a picture of a 2yr+ Elvis and had a bonus double-sided photo inside which used the same photo on the front and a picture from the rehearsals in August on the back. The rear cover used a live shot from Vegas surrounded by the track-listing made up of wooden logs.

ELVIS' 36th BIRTHDAY

Perhaps as a birthday gift to himself, Elvis had a police radio installed in his Mercedes and bought an array of police equipment that included revolving blue lights, shoulder holsters, chemical weapons, and handcuffs. Over the next few days he purchased a number of Smith & Wesson pistols as well as additional police equipment.

The Junior Chamber of Commerce of America announced that Elvis had been selected as one of the nation's Ten Outstanding Young Men of the Year for 1970. The Jaycee awards had been given out since 1939 and had been awarded to distinguished men in all fields (including Leonard Bernstein, Orson Welles, the Reverend Jesse Jackson, and Ralph Nader), with all having one common denominator: they had to be all thirty-five or younger. Elvis was nominated by former sheriff Bill Morris and joined other winners, who this year included Ronald Reagan's press secretary, Ron Ziegler, Tom Atkins, a civil rights activist from Boston, and a medical researcher from Harvard University. Elvis flew to Los Angeles and then to Palm Springs for the weekend, where he purchased another $3,520 worth of guns and gun-related equipment.

Ellis Auditorium, 225 North Main Street, Memphis, Tennessee. (8:00 pm)

During the 8:00 pm. awards ceremony at Ellis Auditorium Elvis proudly accepted an honour that clearly meant much to him as

any public recognition he had ever received. "When I was a child, ladies and gentlemen," he declared in a halting voice, "I was a

dreamer. I read comic books, and I was the hero of the comic book. I saw movies, and I was the hero in the movie. So every

dream that I ever dreamed has come true a hundred times." He concluded with a quote that he first learned from a Roy Hamilton record: "'Without a song the day would never end / Without a song a man ain't got a friend / Without a song the road would never bend / Without a song ...' So I keep singing a song." (video)
