After seeing a screening of a rough cut of the special at NBC, the Colonel expressed his outrage to Tom Sarnoff that not a single Christmas song had been included. In a two-page memo, which included sharp criticism of the selection of live cuts and the pointlessness of some of the production numbers, he expressed his astonishment that after all the talks, after all his concessions, the one thing he had been assured would never happen had happened, against all promises and binding contractual agreements. The Christmas number had to be put back in the show, "or we will all lose a tremendous amount of promotion not only from my company, All Star Shows, but through many other mediums and the following of Presley fans." If the number was not restored, the Colonel declared, the show should be put on ice until the following summer and NBC should "do a complete Christmas show for this fall as per our contract." The song was restored in the form of a throwaway version of "Blue Christmas" from the informal concert.
