Sometime during filming, Marty Lacker returned to Memphis to join Alan Fortas on the ranch. This was just one of a number of personnel changes essentially precipitated by the "Clambake" crisis. Larry Geller, of course, had long since decamped, and Jerry Schilling had decided to strike out on his own. Red and Sonny West were no longer around, and the social circle was shrinking in conjunction with a plan to seek a new house that encouraged a more intimate family atmosphere.

In a special arrangement above and beyond the terms of the regular RCA recording contract, Elvis and the Colonel received $25,000 for the "Clambake" album and $35,000 for the Colonel's new promotional scheme for the 1957 Christmas album. This promotion included a Christmas radio show broadcast on more than 2,400 stations, and the $60,000 appeared to be equally split between Elvis and the Colonel.

With Elvis' interest in the ranch having waned almost to the point of non-existence, Vernon began to sell off pickup trucks, mobile homes and cattle.

With virtually nothing left in the can, there was no new material available for release, so RCA selected two songs from 1961's "Something for Everybody" album for single release. "There's Always Me"/"Judy" (RCA 47-9287). The cover used a publicity photo from "Spinout".

Released from "Speedway", Elvis was scheduled to begin two nights of recording at RCA's Studio A on Sunset Boulevard for a non-soundtrack release. The decision was made in June not to return to Nashville but to record in Los Angeles with "more sophisticated" musicians, and although Felton Jarvis continued to produce, it was veteran session guitarist Billy Strange (an alumnus of several Elvis soundtrack sessions and one of the principal architects of Nancy Sinatra's recent success) who would serve as arranger and contractor for the session.

Plans were radically altered at the last minute for reasons unknown. (In some circles it was suggested that this was the night of the terrible car accident involving Richard Davis, but newspaper publications put this event happening back in March 1963) The Colonel, for whatever reason, sent Elvis and Priscilla off to Las Vegas? accompanied by Joe, Charlie, Billy and Gee Gee.

Songs to be recorded over two nights: "We Call On Him", "If This Love is Wrong", "Here Comes Tomorrow", "Ramblin' Rose", "From a Jack to a King", "After Loving You", "Guitar Man", "And I Tell the Sea", "Brown-Eyed Handsome Man", "I'll Never Find Another You", "Tonight I Won't Be There", "Baby, What You Want Me to Do"
