Rumours continued to appear about Colonel Parker selling Elvis' contract. Dorothy Manners, a columnist for Today, wrote "You could have knocked Elvis Presley over with a Beetle when he read in his Memphis newspaper a rumour out of London that Brian Epstein, Manager of The Beatles, is buying up his contract, as well as Colonel Parkers interest in it". Elvis contacted The Colonel long distance as fast as possible. '" No", drawled the good Colonel Tom, "Not unless they want to pay us enough so we can retire and not have to work any more. If they want us under those conditions, I strongly suggest our selling"'.
