Marty Lacker sent the Colonel a telegram to announce in cryptic fashion that the "ponies" have arrived home safely.
While Elvis had been away, construction had begun on the Meditation Garden located just beyond the swimming pool. It
has been designed with the Self-Realisation Park in Pacific Palisades in mind, with stained-glass panels, Italian marble
statues, and a fountain with fourteen different sprays and underwater light formations designed and commissioned by Marty Lacker's sister and brother-in-law, Ann and Bernie Grenadier. Work would not be fully completed on the Garden until the end of the year, at a cost of $21,000.

In this promotional ad for the new line of RCA Stereo 8 Cartridges, "Girl Happy" can be clearly seen in the catalogue. It was assumed that up to this point, no deal had been made by Colonel Parker with RCA to use Elvis recordings using this format.

Elvis bought a 1966 Electric Glide Harley-Davidson (photo) for $1,941.25 from Taylor Harley-Davidson Sales. He was frequently spotted whizzing around the Graceland grounds during this time on his new motorcycle and on a low-slung go-cart. BILL BLACK PASSED AWAY (RIP)
Baptist Memorial Hospital, Memphis, Tennessee.
Thirty-nine-year-old Bill Black, Elvis' original bass player, and leader of the "Bill Black Combo", died of a brain tumor at 7:15 am at Baptist Hospital in Memphis. Elvis was quoted in the Commercial Appeal as saying that Bill "was a great man and a person that everyone loved. This comes as such a shock to me that I can hardly explain how much I loved Bill." While Vernon and Dee attended the funeral at Forest Hill, Elvis didn't, as he feared his presence would cause a disruption.

(September 17, 1926 - October 21, 1965) (RIP)

In 1965 Elvis sold 40 percent fewer records than he did in 1960, but even so, the Colonel was able once again to renegotiate Elvis' RCA contract on substantially improved terms. The new agreement added one additional year, thus extending the contract through 1972 with a two-year option. The guaranteed annual non-refundable payment against the regular 5 percent royalty was raised from $200,000 to $300,000 with 75 percent going to Elvis and 25 percent to the Colonel. In addition, Elvis and the Colonel received non-recoupable bonuses of $150,000 a piece and an additional $25,000 each in January of 1966. The already existing extra royalties (2 percent domestic, 1 percent foreign) continued to be split equally between Elvis and the Colonel. Finally, the Colonel's annual payment for photographs and consulting increased from $27,000 to $30,000.

RCA issued their latest Gold Standard Elvis single. A full five years after its original release on the "G.l. Blues" soundtrack, "Wooden Heart" appeared as the B-side on a second single within twelve months so that RCA can recoup the money already paid out for permission for international single release of the song. Normally this would be the appropriate time to release as an A-side a song from the upcoming film, "Harum Scarum", but neither Elvis nor the Colonel felt there was a suitable single. "Puppet On A String"/"Wooden Heart" (RCA 447-0650). The A-side was a song taken from the recently released "Girl Happy" soundtrack. The cover used a publicity photo from "Viva Las Vegas". The rear sleeve promoted the source albums from which the tracks were taken.

RCA around this time every year continued to pluck from the 1957 Christmas Album, in order to release yet another Gold Standard 45 in time for the festive season. "Santa Claus is Back in Town"/"Blue Christmas" (RCA 447-0647). The choice for the B-sides of the two singles issued today was the same as the Christmas single last year. Even the front sleeve of this single was the same as last year. The rear sleeve promoted the re-issued 1964 Christmas Album.
