RCA issued their latest Elvis soundtrack single: "Do the Clam"/"You'll Be Gone" (RCA 47-8500).

"Do the Clam" from the "Girl Happy" soundtrack was an attempt to start another dance craze like 'The Twist'. "You'll Be Gone" was a ballad from 1962 co-written by Red West, Charlie Hodge and Elvis. The sleeve used publicity shots from "Girl Happy".

Soundtrack recording for "Harum Scarum" began at RCA's Studio B in Nashville. Once again to be produced by Sam Katzman, the session was set up at the last minute and because of the hurried manner in which the session had been scheduled, Elvis' regular group are unavailable, and their places were taken by Charlie McCoy on guitar, Henry Strzelecki on bass and Kenneth Buttrey on drums. They were joined by Rufus Long and Ralph Strobel on flute and oboe in order to create a Middle Eastern touch to the soundtrack.

Elvis recorded two songs, while the band laid down three additional tracks. Meanwhile, the Colonel, recognizing the lethargy and general lack of interest that Elvis had been showing lately toward his Hollywood career, had sent anxious letters of encouragement to new foreman Marty Lacker, dubbing him the "caravan superintendent" and warned him to leave plenty of time for the cross-country trip and to be on the lookout for bad weather.
