At some point during the summer Elvis urged everyone in the group to read Timothy Leary's 1964 "Psychedelic Experience"

and Aldous Huxley's "The Doors of Perception" while he also encouraged Red and Sonny West and Alan Fortas to try LSD

under his supervision. Later in the summer Elvis served the group marijuana brownies, obviously fascinated by the psychedelic experience.

525 Perugia Way, Bel Air, Los Angeles, California. (10:00 pm)

In the midst of elaborate security arrangements, carried out by the Colonel, the Beatles arrived at 10:00 pm for a visit at

Elvis' Perugia Way home. (photos) Despite the security precautions, or perhaps because of them, hundreds of fans gathered at the

Bel Air gates. Elvis was sitting in front of a soundless TV on the long L-shaped white couch in the den when his guests

arrived. After a while he picked up a bass guitar and started playing along with Charlie Rich's "Mohair Sam," (audio) which was on the jukebox. Over the next few hours they talked about their experiences of the hysteria of a crowd, what cars they owned, what else was said is anybody's guess, as no tapes were running at the time.

As the fab four left, Paul said, "Elvis, we'd like you and the other guys to come up to the place where we are staying tomorrow night."

"Well, I'll see," Elvis replied. "I don't know whether I can make it or not. But thanks all the same." Elvis smiled and shook their hands.

John Lennon told Jerry Schilling several days later that the evening really meant a lot to him and asked Jerry to tell Elvis that "if it hadn't been for him we would have been nothing."
