Up until this point Elvis was an "Honorary Chief Deputy Sheriff" of Shelby County. Today he was appointed "Special Deputy Sheriff" and photographed and fingerprinted for his badge (photo). He had "always been interested in law enforcement," he told Sheriff Bill Morris, and in fact even "applied for a job as a Memphis policeman" at age nineteen. Whether or not this is actually true is unknown, but he was clearly drawn to the uniform and the badge.

A special preview of "Roustabout" was shown at the Studio Theatre on Marathon Street in Hollywood.

Graceland, 3764 Highway 51 South, Memphis, Tennessee.
Not feeling the best, Elvis called Dr. Charles Clarke, the physician who attended his mother at her death. Clarke came out
to Graceland to see him and submitted a bill of $10 for the house call.

RCA issued their new Elvis single: "Ask Me"/"Ain't That Loving You Baby" (RCA 47-8440).
RCA were originally going to release Elvis' version of Chuck Berry's "Memphis" as the next single but Johnny Rivers had already beaten them to it. So with very little left in the vault in the way of new material, they chose the ballad "Ask Me" as the A-side and then picked a rockin' blues song from June 1958 titled "Ain't That Loving You Baby" as the B-side. This song was originally classed as not having a satisfactory master, but take 4 was selected. The sleeve used a publicity photograph from the movie; "Roustabout".

On his final night at home, Elvis screened "Dr. Strangelove" at the Memphian once again. He had just hired Memphian Mike Keaton to accompany the group to California, and now, in the early-morning hours, asked twentytwo-year-old Memphis State student Jerry Schilling if he would also like to go. Schilling, whose brother Billy Ray grew up with Red West and was a Memphis policeman, had been around the group since 1954, when at the age of twelve he started playing football with Elvis and his friends in Guthrie Park.
