Yet another tragic passing occurred in the music world when American singer/songwriter Sam Cooke was shot dead in a Los Angeles motel. He was shot three times by the motel's manager, Bertha Franklin.

On the back of the new two picture deal with United Artists, the Colonel negotiated a new deal with M.G.M., effective from January 4, 1965. The new agreement was for three motion pictures and Elvis received $1,000,000 for the first picture, $250,000 of which was paid in $1,000-a-week installments for the course of the next five years. For the two following films he received $ 750,000 each, with 40 percent of the profits on all three. Perhaps needless to say, one of the key elements of the deal was that the Colonel had finally achieved his benchmark figure of $1 million.

Graceland, 3764 Highway 51 South, Memphis, Tennessee.

Elvis spent Christmas with family and friends at Graceland.

At Marty Lacker's behest, the guys' Christmas present to Elvis was a special Bible with a "tree of life" motif drawn on the front page. On each of the branches was the name of one of the dozen or so guys, and at the bottom is one of Elvis' favorite quotations: "And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall set you free," written in English, Hebrew, and Latin. Elvis noticed that Larry Geller's name had been omitted and refused to accept the gift until the slight had been corrected. It is during this same time period that Elvis, who may or may not know that his mother's maternal grandmother, Martha Tackett, was Jewish, began to wear a Jewish "chai" around his neck (he was, he said, just hedging his bets) and added a Jewish star to Gladys' grave marker.
