Although the Colonel tried desperately to prevent it, the cost of "Viva Las Vegas" soared well over budget, which
threatened a loss of profit participation (a given in every Elvis picture). In this atmosphere the Colonel finalised a deal
with another M.G.M. producer, Sam Katzman, that virtually guaranteed profits by promising a radical diminution of
shooting time and tight control of all costs. Katzman, who produced the first rock 'n' roll film, "Rock Around the Clock", for $300,000 in 1956, was known as the "King of the Quickies" for good reason.
