In early May, Red West went home to Memphis. He wasn't being paid enough to stay and felt no better than a flunkie. Things were supposedly so bad that Red couldn't even afford to buy a beer.

There was a brief interview with Red West in the Memphis Press-Scimitar that revealed he had been home for several days. Elvis tried to recruit Alan Fortas to replace him but failed, because Fortas had already been forewarned by Red of the restrictiveness of life in Germany. Elvis contacted Cliff Gleaves, who made plans to depart for Germany on the thirteenth.
