The Colonel wrote that he had arranged for photographer Don Cravens to go to Germany to portray Elvis in his duties as a "regular soldier." The Colonel hoped that this kind of publicity may help convince the army to let Elvis finish out the balance of his tour in the States. He could do some recruiting for the army while at the same time build up the supply of photographs "that I must have if we are to maintain our special promotion business."

Vernon and Elisabeth were involved in an automobile accident an the Autobahn near Obermorlen. They were on the way home from a shopping trip to Frankfurt. The black Mercedes that Elvis used to drive to the base was a write-off and Elisabeth had to be taken to hospital. Vernon stayed at the scene of the accident. Following the incident, rumours spread that Elvis had been killed, although he was not even in the car.
