Elvis called George Klein back in Memphis. He made regular calls to different friends at home, especially Anita Wood.

In early January, Elisabeth Stefaniak took a five hour train ride to Bad Nauheim. She knew Elvis would be on duty when she

arrived. She was met at the station by Vernon, Red West and Lamar Fike. She moved into the hotel with Elvis and his household, occupying a corner room that had been used for storage of the fan mail she was now in charge of answering, learning quickly from Red and Lamar how to sign Elvis' name and use the signature stamp when required.

Elvis woke Colonel Parker with a 5:00 A.M. phone call that turned into an hour-long chat. The Colonel joked that the call interrupted his dream about Elvis getting an early army release, and now he doesn't know how the dream would have turned out.

Colonel Parker suggested to Elvis in a long letter that he should consider making some home tape recordings, featuring voice and piano alone, that included some of his favourite spirituals, like "Just a Closer Walk With Thee." There would be no need for any further instrumentation, the Colonel explained, because the fans just want to hear his voice. A few days later Parker hinted to RCA that he may have a surprise for them, but nothing ever came of this idea.

Probably at his manager's suggestion, Elvis wrote to the Colonel, and requested he make arrangements with RCA to put out a recordeded message to his fans: "I want to be able to thank them not only for buying my records and for their loyalty to me but also for the help they have given me in deciding the kind of songs to sing... . I'm deeply grateful to them, and I want them to know it. When I'm out of the army recording again, I will always listen to their ideas, just as I did before. I just wanted to let my fans know how I feel.

                                                                                                                     Sincerely, Elvis."
