Sam Phillips had previously contacted Jim Denny to try and set up an appearance at the Ryman Auditorium (photo) in Nashville, Tennessee on the "Grand Ole Opry" . They performed "Blue Moon of Kentucky" with the writer of the song sitting in the audience. Bill Monroe met the band later on backstage and commented that he liked their version of his song. The "Opry" audience overall were not that impressed.

After this performance at the Eagle's Nest in Memphis, the band drove for seven hours to get to Shreveport in Louisiana. Sam Phillips had arranged for a try-out on the 'Louisiana Hayride' which was seen as the upstart cousin to the Grand Ole Opry. It was known as the 'Cradle of the Stars' and had already kicked off the careers of Hank Williams, Slim Whitman, Webb Pierce and Faron Young.
While in Shreveport, Elvis, Scotty and Bill stayed at the Captain Shreve hotel.

The band entered the Municipal Auditorium in Shreveport and made their debut on the 'Louisiana Hayride'
Show (photo). Broadcast every Saturday night through KWKH Radio.
Microphones were placed among the audience to transmit the show. The main sponsor of the Hayride was
tobacco company 'Lucky Strike' and Elvis was brought out as the Lucky Strike Amateur Contestant, shortly
after 9:00 pm.
They were introduced on stage to a lukewarm audience by Frank Page (photo) who stepped in for Horace Logan.
