Sam Phillips had acquired a new song called "Without You" that he wanted to record and his assistant Marion Keisker, suggested that he should "contact the kid with sideburns and give him a chance".
Elvis arrived at the studio before Marion could hang up the phone. After many attempts, Elvis failed to record a satisfactory take of the song.
